African Hair Threading: Ghana Plaits

Ghana plaits- using a piece of weave thread to wrap around a section of hair making it look like it is twisted but it really isn't (this is my definition)
Lately I have fallen in love with this method, I think it is the cutest style especilly for the little ones.  I decided that I will attempt these on my girls hair once school starts back and there is no more swimming, right now I stick with protective styles that are easy to wash.
I came across a few videos showing how to do Ghana Plaits and thought I would share them.

Here are a few sites for more information:

I will be trying this on both my hair and my girls when school starts back.  Stay tuned.

Box braid cuties

Once again we have moved on to another protective style, the past week the girls had small cornrows that looked a hot mess by yesterday with all the swimming they do in the summer. This time I decided to do box braids, a first for them, hopefully we can get two weeks out of this style.

Before taking the cornrows out I softened the hair with a spritz of water, a little VO5 moisture milk, it hlps taking those little braids out much easier. I then shampooed conditioned, and DC'd, since it had been a while for that. Yes I do DC my girls hair about once a month.
To each braid section I sprayed the same spritz  mixture as above but added aloe vera juice and olive oil then sealed with my whipped mango butter, perfection, their hair turned out great.

OCM: Oil Cleansing Method

For the past week I have been doing the Oil Cleansing Method and so far so good with the results.  I have been hearing so much about this and just decided to do some research before getting started.  For the past year or so I have been using Aveeno face wash and following up with my Oil of Olay  moisturizer, I loved the Aveeno and no one could take away the Olay, but I think I am giving them up, I surely won't be missing paying that hefty price for them.  The one reason I liked the Aveeno was that the cleansing pads have a scrubbing side and I would notice that I would have alot of whiteheads around my chin and nose and have to make sure to scrub those away.  But since using the OCM I have no  whiteheads that I have to go back and scrub away and my skin has been so super soft and not even dry feeling.  I do this method every other day and only add my moisturizer, which is mango butter, when I feel the need.  I don't have bad or problem skin besides the little whiteheads and the occassional blemish when it is "that time", so I was not looking for a cure just something a little more natural and cheaper, plus I am not going out of my way to buy the oils cause I use them in my hair anyways so they are always here.
Here are a few websites that I visited to find out more information:
The Oil Cleansing Method , Simple Mom, and Nitty Gritty on the oil cleansing method

OCM consists of using castor oil and another carrier oil (Olive Oil being the most popular) to cleanse the face giving you clear soft skin, reducing blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, and cysts.   Castor oil is the main cleanser in the mix, it is an anti inflammatory oil with healing and cleansing properties, because of its high potency and thickness is should be used with another lighter oil, your skin type will determine how much oil you will use in your mix.  I found that most of the mixtures were the same on different sites but you can mix accordingly.
Oily skin:  3 parts castor oil, 1 part carrier oil
Normal skin: equal parts castor oil and carrier oil
Dry skin: 1 part castor oil, 3 parts carrier oil

My skin is normal so I mixed the equal parts of the the oils together and even added a little Jojoba oil  to mine.  I have been very pleased with the results, at first I was skeptical, how in the world could oil clean my skin but I gave it a try anyways following the directions as it was.
1.  I massage the oil into my face making sure to get my neck also.
2.  I take a hot towel and lay it across my face until it gets cool, I do that 3 times then take the warm towel and gently wipe the rest of the oil away. This process opens the pores and draws out dirt and other impurities.
3.  Then I take my hands and cup cold water onto  my face closing the pores back up.
4.  Add moisturizer if you want, mine of choice is just a little but of mango butter.
In the morning I just wipe my sleepy eyes and then I am good to go.

Of course I have to post pictures of my baby smooth skin and whiteheadless chin that has not had to be scrubbed in several days.
up by my lip I had terrible whiteheads and had
to make sure to scrub there and the
bottom of my lip. Not a whitehead in sight.

Seriously, take a look at that baby soft skin,
I love it. And no this photo
has not been altered.

Give it a try and see if you like it, if you already use it let me know how you like it.
Happy Cleansing!!!

Tuesday reading review: Keeper of Secrets...Translations of an Incident

I love to read and decided to showcase a few several of the books that I have read and found to be really entertaining to me...hint, hint.  I have always been an avid reader and since I have gotten this Kindle back in October I have become even more addicted to reading cause I can download a book whenever I get ready.  The one good thing about the Kindle is I can set up my account for a certain limit meaning I am not paying an arm and a leg for a book.

On to the first book:
Keeper of Secrets...Tanslations of an Incident
by Anjuelle Floyd

This book was great and literally took me two days to read, I actually had to make myself put the book down so I would have something to read on the roadtrip back home to Memphis.
The book is actually made up of 8 different stories and each story contains their own characters and at least one of the characters is connected with one of the stories.  The one thing they all have in common is an incident in a restaurant that happens at the beginning of the story.
Each story is about a couple dealing with love, intimacy, truths, and coming to terms with these three things.
The first story starts off with Raven, a therapist, and Drew Clark, a lawyer, who have been married for 16 years, two months after marrying Drew Raven aborts a child of a man she used to ( and still maybe) love.  After that she can't stop thinking of that baby and at the same time try to come to understand her mothers betrayal and lies to her and blames her for the problems she is dealing with now, to love her husband or move on.
Have you ever read a book and thought wow I feel like this book is talking to me? That is how I felt about this book, it truly opened my eyes and had me take a look at things that I keep to myself and and realize I know what I need to do, many times while reading this book I found my mind wandering and had to come back...more on that later.

To find out more about this book and the author follow this link, Keeper of Secrets...

Price: 99 cents on Kindle
          $11.66 on Amazon

This book was awesome and I would recommend it over and over again.
Definitely gets 5*****

Greetings from the road & Updates

Yes I have nothing else to do but post from the road, I was reading but I have to save the rest of my book for the ride home. It was hard to put down cause it is so interesting, I will have to post a list of the books I have read, you will not be disappointed.
Anywho, on our way to Texas for the 4th to visit my mom, girls in the back with a little car sickness as usual, they got it honest from me, and that's with the bracelets and all. While driving I thought I would post about my hubby who cut his Loc's out after getting them started several weeks ago. In all fairness I don't blame him, it's hot and he works on air conditioners which makes him sweaty then he starts digging in his hair making it look a mess like it was yesterday. So instead of making me do his hair he decided to cut it off, no worries though he his going to grow it back out and start over in the Fall. Pics at the bottom...

Quick product review: with a little water last night I retwisted my twists from Tuesday with Kimmay leave in and the As I Am Twist and Define Butter...the best definition ever. Took twists out while riding and my hair is so defined and shiney, can't wait to seperate and fluff some more. I think I am in love with the Butter, again.
